Warwick, RI

Did you ever wonder what the restaurant, grocery store, department store or bank that you shop or patronize while in Warwick, RI used to be (at least going back to the late 50's)?  Maybe not, but if you have, here are some of them listed by street name and street number (the list will be continuously expanded and updated).  To search for a particular business or street, hit the "Ctrl" key (lower left area of your keyboard) AND the letter "F" key at the same time.  Credit for much of the information goes to the Warwick Public Library and the archives of the Providence Journal and Warwick Beacon. What It Used To Be In Sarasota, FL

Mall Hall Of Fame

Here is a great website for more information on Midland (Rhode Island) and Warwick Malls as well as many others.

https://mall-hall-of-fame.blogspot.com

How this blog started:

The origins of this blog began in my hometown of Warwick and it then took a strange detour through Sarasota, FL to make it happen.  It started back in the mid-1980’s, when I became interested in old gas stations and for the next few years, took hundreds of photos of gas stations throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, many of which are included here and on the Cranston blog and now on the link just above.  During a visit to the Warwick Public Library in 1990, I noticed a whole section of both current and old yearly street directories that were sitting in racks within the reference area of the library (they are now stored away in the librarians' reference room and can be viewed by request).  They included several RI cities and in some cases, went back 50 years or more. Since this was in the days before electronic devices, I took a notebook and wrote down a year-by year history of the names of many gas stations I had taken photos of by their address (similar to the blog today).  By the mid-90’s, I had relocated to Sarasota, FL and many years later, around 2013, came across the Google Newspaper Archives, which had digital copies of Sarasota newspapers from microfilm going back almost 100 years. I became fascinated going through old ads and stories to see what not only old gas stations used to be before I moved to Sarasota, but also restaurants and stores.  After viewing a brief Youtube video taken in 1989 of a drive through of US 41 in Sarasota, which sparked my interest even more, I then looked up online to find where the Sarasota street directories are located and found them at the Sarasota County History Center, using a spreadsheet to type my findings again listed by address and year.  While I was doing this, I remembered and found the old notebook from 1990, which had survived about ten moves, and entered the gas stations from Warwick on a spreadsheet. After doing that, I became interested in Warwick again, so on my yearly family visits there, I spent a few mornings at the library, researching those same directories from 25 years earlier and capturing the information needed on various business establishments and entering it on the spreadsheets.   I then decided to write a blog on the information I had written on Sarasota, which I kept putting down after starting, but finally came together in June 2017 with about 150 addresses listed.  At the same time, I decided to do a similar blog for Warwick and it was put together quickly and posted the same day with only about 65 addresses listed.   As it turned out, the Warwick blog was the first of the two that a reader posted to a group page, and aside from the occasional spike from a Sarasota group posting, has consistently garnered more page views on a daily basis ever since.  While it is impossible to include every business establishment Warwick has ever had, it is a never ending task and I keep finding more and more addresses to list (now up to almost 600).

Thank you for viewing the blog and I hope it has brought back many memories of growing up in Warwick as well as learning something new.  Questions, comments and corrections are always appreciated.

  1. 2661 West Shore Rd was Bayshore Pharmacy from 1952 till the 1990s. It was part of a shopping strip with a small restaurant and I don't remember what else. There was a soda fountain, toys, stamps, greeting cards, etc. But after the Dec. 1973 fire it reopened as a professional pharmacy (no more soda fountain). In the great blizzard of '78, my Dad (the pharmacist and owner) walked 8 miles each way to fill prescriptions for nursing home patients. Now I think it's a parking lot...

    1. Thanks for the question! Joe's Spa was located at 2444 West Shore Rd. from about the early to mid-to-late 60's. That would put it at the location of Veterans Plaza (since the mid 70's and now includes Act One Hair Studio) today. Before Joe's, it was Poirier's Variety, Cave's Variety and also Charlie's Spa.

  4. What a great list and so many properties/businesses that bring back memories of my childhood. I think some of your dates are debatable, but that's understandable given the hundred of entries. For example, Cornucopia was definitely around around 1986 because I remember they came around my neighborhood off of Church Ave. with fliers and promotions either during the summer of 1985 or 86. We moved from that neighborhood in the fall of '86.

Also, where did you get the pictures? Reader contributions?

Thanks so much for bringing back so many memories!

    1. Also, on Old Warwick between Aimee's Fruit Stand and Buckeye Brook, there was a freestanding building that offered, I believe, roasted chickens in the 1970s and probably through the early 1980s. It was quite an odd place and in a random location. I don't recall what the structure became after that or even if the building is even there anymore (I live in Atlanta now). Anyone else remember this building/business?

    4. Thanks for the great feedback! Some beginning and ending years of the business establishments were found in old newspaper articles or advertisements and I listed the exact year in those cases. However, with many of the others, all I had to go on were street directories, in which the listings often seemed to be about a year or two behind the year the directories were actually published. In addition, there were a few years that the directories were not available, so I had to make a best estimate of the timeframe each business existed (ex: early-to-mid 60’s to mid-to-late 70’s). Cornucopia was one of the very few I had no information on and only found a comment somewhere stating that it had replaced West Shore Inn (hence the “was said to be” comment). The majority of the photos (over 60%) were taken by the author through the years.

    6. I was finally able to confirm through newspaper ads in the projo archives that Cornucopia did in fact replace West Shore Inn at 957 West Shore Rd. with a grand opening in April 1993. Their ads ran through November, so it looks like they were only open for a few months.

    2. Uncle Tony's Pizza certainly has been in Warwick, in fact there have been at least three locations here. The one you probably went to was located at 1201 Warwick Ave. from 1976 to 1984 and became Mama Spumoni's in September 1984. This was most recently the location of a Rite Aid Pharmacy. Then around the end of 1987, a new Uncle Tony's opened up just a few buildings away at 1229 Warwick Ave. It would later become Rigatoni's in 1995. The third location was at Warwick Mall from the late 80's into the 90's.

Also Coro's Coffee shop close to Oakland Beach School. I remember Baxter's Variety in Bayside gave credit and kept a book to record it.

  20. I was so involved with trying to remember Cranston, I didn't realize this part of the Warwick page was on here. I posted earlier today that I didn't know Warwick that well until I read this page. I remember/know more than I thought. I might not know exactly where a place was but I do remember passing it or, in some cases, actually going there.
Today, try and find a store, a place or someone who has a particular skill or trade we need is next to impossible to find. With luck, you find something by word of mouth. I saw an ad not long ago in Projo that cleans/paints/repairs wicker. It's was a small ad in the bottom left of a page. I'd see it, say I need to go there since I need something painted and now the ad is gone. I should have cut it out but ads are so pricey, these little businesses can't afford them and still operate. Stores & jobs like those are no longer ''in business'' but are done as a side job - someone has the skills but the demand is small. Add in that we're a disposable society and we've killed off the little guy. Now he makes pocket change (if you can find him) instead of a living. He's not using his skills, not doing what he probably loves doing. I'm not against progress or this site wouldn't exist. It's our history, our memories, it's in a techie cloud and in some future day, someone will find it, read it, enjoy it and do some digging, unearth what we knew and where we went.

    1. Welcome to the Warwick page, Cranstongirl! You bring up some great points. Progress can be great, but it also comes at a cost and we have lost a lot of the special things that meant a lot to us when we were younger.
Hopefully sites like this can not only bring back memories to those that were there, but also educate those who were not as to what it was like in their hometown and how we got to where we are. It is amazing how much history is right there in the streets that we drive by every day!

Also there was a Tanzi's market next door to the Citizens bank in that wildes corner plaza..I lived in the gramacy apts. In the back of Bayshore plaza, remember that fire as a kid.
Also are there any photos of the jack in the box on the now airport rd.
Some one told me that there was never one in R.I., but I remember going there as a kid. There was a r.i. dmv or unemployment center across the street, I believe.

It was either then, or right before he leased the store out to the conimicut variety owners - so, either in ‘91 or around ‘93/94ish

As a child, my mother would give me the penny stamps thinking I would not do anything with them but I saved enough to get a 2 man pup tent that I put in the back yard and slept out in it every dry night for the next 5 or six summers with an old military surplus sleeping bag from the army navy store. Camping is to this day one of my favorite past times.

  45. Do you know anything about the renaming of streets in Warwick? I think it was in the 1940s, at the time when the village addresses were unified. Prior to that time, you might address a letter to "Conimicut, R.I.," but after that you'd send it to "Warwick R.I." Apparently there were identically named streets in the various Warwick villages, so some had to be changed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. All of the Warwick streets were renumbered in the early 1940's to what they are today. It appears that most of any renaming of streets was done before that. FYI, Warwick City Directories before 1960 can now be viewed online at the Internet Archive website.

Hey, thought you might like to know that the old 1149 restaurant on Division St (along with the long abandoned residence next door) has been completely raised as part of the project to replace the Rt 4 overpass there (they were using the space to store construction vehicles and equipment). Now that the bridge is finished, the plot has been sold off and a new Neon Market is being built there.

Howard "Howie/Andy" Anderson retired in Dec 1959, he was interviewed by the Providence Journal which said he was closing the store after 21 years. After she passed, I found my grandmother still had the article on her father Howie. She also still had the antique cash register from the store.
